Jamestown Settlement - Three Ships

We were able to board replicas of the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery...the three ships that transported the original Jamestown colonists to America.

Susan Constant was the flagship and largest of the three ships that brought the first permanent English settlers to Virginia in 1607.

Specifications:
  • length overall:  116 feet
  • mast height:  95 feet
  • Christopher Newport, Captain
  • 54 passengers and 17 crew, est.

Godspeed
was the second largest vessel in the fleet.

Specifications:
  • length overall:  88 feet
  • mast height:  71 feet 6 inches
  • Bartholomew Gosnold, Captain
  • 39 passengers and 13 crew, est.

Discovery
was the smallest of the three vessels.  Susan Constant and Godspeed sailed back to England in mid-June, but Discovery did not.  It was used by the settlers to explore the inland waterways of the Chesapeake Bay.

Specifications:
  • length overall:  66 feet
  • mast height:  59 feet
  • John Ratcliffe, Captain
  • 12 passengers and 9 crew, est.

The voyage to Virginia lasted 144 days.  The ships arrived at Jamestown in May 1607.
