  • lowfat peach yogurt sprinkled with Betty Crocker Cupcake Gems (black only from the Goblin Pearls mix)

Halloween Lunch #1

of 5 Halloween lunches, maybe??  We'll see!

This was T's lunch today.  He was so thrilled!  (It has been so long since I have prepared a special lunch for him!)

Pumpkins and Jack-o-Lanterns!

  • two pumpkin-shaped sandwiches
  • Cheetos Puffs
  • Little Debbie Pumpkin Delight
  • candy corn in an orange mini muffin tin paper liner
  • milk in a jack-o-lantern cup

Since the meal didn't require eating utensils, I put a drinking straw in that section of the tray...however, T didn't want to use it.

And in case you can't tell, that's a pumpkin stencil-cut placemat under the tray.

Top 5 of 2014 -- Food Fun Round-Up!

In 2014, I prepared many bentos, muffin tin meals, and other food fun meals for T.  He enjoyed every single one!  :)

Here are the Top 5...
the five most-viewed food fun snacks and breakfast, lunch, and supper meals I created in 2014:

The top three are all Winnie-the-Pooh muffin tin meals.  I made all three of them the same week...after I read to T the book, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne.  I guess there are a lot of silly old bear lovers out there...of which I am one!
;-)

#1
 Winnie-the-Pooh Breakfast

#2
Winnie-the-Pooh Lunch

#3
Winnie-the-Pooh Supper

The top fourth is an Easter bento...full of bunnies!

#4
Bountiful Bunnies

The top fifth is a springtime butterfly-themed muffin tin meal.

#5
Butterflies Lunch

Many other meals received tons of views.  (Thank you!!)  I just love to make special meals for T...and it's quite rewarding that he loves them so!

In looking back through my 2014 food fun posts, I was surprised to find that I hadn't made more fun meals than I did.  I think "make more muffin tin meals and bentos" will have to be one of my New Year's resolutions!

Owl Sandwich

Another owl-themed lunch today for T!

  • sandwich, cut to form wings
  • apple slice cut into circles for eyes
  • carrot slice cut into triangle for beak
  • carrot slices with tiny triangles cut from them for feet
  • pretzel rod for tree branch

This sandwich was my inspiration!

Owl Sandwich

I prepared another owl-themed lunch for T today.

The owl is a snack idea that I found in this unit and lapbook....I just made a couple of changes.  It's made from a piece of bologna, a piece of cheddar cheese (a square, cut in half diagonally), two Ritz crackers, two slices of black olive, and pretzel sticks (broken into pieces).

I cut two slices of bread with a circle cutter and placed one bread circle under the bologna.  Right before T was ready to eat, we said "Bye-bye, owl!" and put the second bread circle on top to make a sandwich.

I also gave T some tortilla chips in a green bowl with an owl pick.  For the pick, I used a foam owl and embellished it with two tiny wiggle eyes...and glued a toothpick to the back.

Baby Owls

Today, we began a unit study about owls.

This was T's lunch today...which went along with a book we read, Owl Babies by Martin Waddell.

Once there were three baby owls:  Sarah and Percy and Bill....
The baby owls came out of their house, and they sat on the tree and waited.
~from Owl Babies by Martin Waddell

  • three baby owls > three owl-shaped sandwiches (white bread with sprinkles for eyes)
  • tree > pretzel sticks
  • foliage > romaine lettuce
  • full moon > ranch dressing
  • dark of night > black placemat

M is for Monkey

This was T's lunch for today...reminiscent of our recent trips to the zoo for his birthday.

  • two monkey-shaped sandwiches (one made with the crust...and holding a banana-shaped candy)
  • green vine (pull-apart Twizzlers)
  • "M" and "MONKEY" Scrabble Junior Cheez-It Crackers
  • pretzel balls in a paper liner with a monkey design and a monkey pick
  • homemade banana pudding — the kind where the custard is made from scratch in a double-boiler  :P
  • milk in a cup with a monkey design

T came into the kitchen while I was preparing this lunch.  He pointed to the Cheez-It Crackers and asked, "What say?"  I held up the monkey-shaped cookie cutter and replied, "/m/" as I moved my finger from left to right below the letters.  He exclaimed, "Zoo!"  Okay...so he made a connection, right??  (~Not the one I was hoping for, obviously!)

Coral Reef

For lunch today, T enjoyed another bento with a coral reef theme.

His lunch consisted of:

  • two angelfish-shaped sandwiches (each with a candy eye)
  • puffed goldfish crackers
  • "CORAL REEF" Scrabble Junior Cheez-It Crackers
  • peach yogurt (in a small blue bowl with a waves design)
  • Little Debbie coral reef cake
  • milk (in a shaky cup with a blue and green fishes design)
There's also a coral-colored shell ring next to the sandwiches.

I was thrilled to discover a tank displaying a coral reef at the Riverbanks Zoo!

This was printed on a sign posted next to the tank:

What is Coral?

Corals look like plants or rocks,
but they are colonies of tiny animals.
Up close, each "polyp" looks like a
sea anemone, with a sac-like body
and mouth ringed with tentacles.
Polyps feed on tiny prey that drifts
into their stinging arms.

There were other signs posted, too.

Hard corals secrete stony skeletons
in many different shapes and sizes.

Soft corals have flexible skeletons.
Sea whips and sea fans bend and wave
with the currents.

Riches of the Reef

Reef communities contain
a dazzling diversity of life.
Every inch of colorful coral
is covered with anemones,
algae, urchins, sponges
and other clinging life.

There are more kinds of fish here
than anywhere else in the sea.
Some are drab and inconspicuous;
others boast gaudy colors
and fantastic shapes.
All are abundant.

This is a close-up of what T is checking out!

Coral Reef

For lunch today, T enjoyed this bento with a coral reef theme.

His lunch consisted of:
  • two fish-shaped sandwiches (one with a candy eye)
  • puffed goldfish crackers
  • "CORAL REEF" Scrabble Junior Cheez-It Crackers
  • applesauce (in a small blue bowl with a waves design)
  • Little Debbie coral reef cake
  • milk (in a shaky cup with a blue and green fishes design)
There's also a coral-colored shell ring next to the applesauce container.

I discovered some interesting facts about coral reefs.
  • Coral reefs are underwater structures made from calcium carbonate secreted by corals.
  • Coral reefs are colonies of tiny animals found in marine waters that contain few nutrients.
  • Coral reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny, and agitated waters.
  • Coral reefs are most commonly found at shallow depths in tropical waters, but deep water and cold water corals also exist.
  • Coral reefs occupy less than 0.1% of the world's ocean surface, yet they provide a home for 25% of all marine species.

  • flower-shaped tortilla chips

The lunch was well-received.  :)

Bountiful Bunnies

This was T's lunch today...lots of bunnies.

  • bunny-shaped sandwich with black sprinkles for the eyes and a pink heart-shaped sprinkle for the nose
(I drew the mouth with a food-safe marker; however, there was a hole in the bread...right in the wrong place!  ha.)
  • Utz Cotton Tails White Cheddar Cheese Ball Snack with a bunny pick
  • citrus fruit cocktail in a white silicone cupcake liner with a bunny decoration propped up in front
  • strawberry yogurt in a pink silicone cupcake liner with an egg ring
  • pink marshmallow bunny
  • bunny-shaped white fudge-covered shortbread cookie

Well...T ate the sandwich, yogurt, and cookie....

Personally, I thought the cheese ball snack tasted super-yummy!

T ate this dinosaur-themed meal for lunch today.

  • dinosaur-shaped sandwiches on pretzel sticks (logs)
  • carrots (vegetation) with dip
  • "D" (for Dinosaur) Scrabble Junior Cheez-It Cracker
  • pretzel balls in a dinosaur cupcake liner with pick
(It looks like a bumpy-backed dinosaur, right?)
  • a few additional pretzel balls (rocks)
  • peach yogurt with dinosaur sprinkles

Aren't the dinosaur sprinkles cute?  :)

Thank You

Dear cohorts in making food fun,

Thank you for your votes for T's peanut butter themed bentos.  I am honored that "Elephants Love Peanuts" was chosen as Bento of the Week at Bento Blog Network.  :D

Happily,

Elephants Love Peanuts

At least, that's what I thought.  Apparently, it isn't true!  According to the Smithsonian website (and the article, "10 Things You Didn't Know About Asian Elephants")...

Peanut-loving elephants are a myth.  Elephants, Asian or otherwise, don't eat peanuts in the wild, nor are peanuts a typical diet for captive elephants.  In fact, most elephants don't even appear to like them very much.

Well, imagine that!!

Okay...so this was T's lunch today.  :P

  • elephant-shaped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
  • "DOTHAN AL" Scrabble Junior Cheez-It Crackers
  • roasted peanuts in the shell
  • applesauce with circus-colored sprinkles
  • Nutter Butter Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies

T loves peanuts...the cookie variety, anyway!
;o)

Did you know that Dothan, Alabama is called "The Peanut Capital of the World"? Approximately one-fourth of the U.S. peanut crop is produced nearby, with much of it being processed in the city of Dothan.¹

In Dothan stands a brilliant gold peanut monument acknowledging the debt of gratitude the area owes and feels toward this legume.  Back when the boll weevil wreaked havoc on the cotton crops of the South, peanuts became the salvation of the farmer.  This versatile and more pest-resistant crop was highly instrumental in reviving the sagging economy.²

Dream For Peace

I made this lunch for T for tomorrow.

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. - sandwich on whole wheat bread with sprinkles
  • I Have a Dream speech bubble - honey wheat bread with sprinkles
  • "M L KING JR" - Scrabble Junior Cheez-It Crackers
  • arms folded in prayer - Rold Gold Tiny Twists Cheddar Pretzels
  • friends - Pepperidge Farm Ginger Family gingerbread cookie
  • peace - vanilla yogurt with peace ring

"I Have a Dream" is a public speech delivered by American civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. on August 28, 1963, in which he calls for an end to racism in the United States. Delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington, the speech was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement.

St. Patrick's Day

T had leftover pizza for lunch today, so this was his supper.

  • leprechaun sandwich
  • low-fat peach yogurt with green sugar sprinkles
  • baby carrots with Hidden Valley Creamy Parmesan Dressing
  • Little Debbie Shamrock Shortbread Cookie
  • milk in a leprechaun cup with a green-striped paper straw

Here is a close-up view of the sandwich.

I cut bread into a face shape and a hat shape.  I decorated the hat with Air Heads Xtremes Rainbow Berry Sour Candy and a Starburst Fruit Chew.  (I unwrapped the fruit chew and microwaved it for approximately 20 seconds.  Then, I rolled it flat and cut it into a square shape.)

I used candy decorations for the facial features.  The leprechaun's beard is Oven Baked Cheetos.

With a mouthful of cookie, T looked at his sandwich and showed "beard"...and then he pointed to his papa, who has a (reddish) beard.
;o)

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Penguins

I made this penguins meal for T's lunch for tomorrow.

It contains:

  • penguin-shaped sandwiches with sprinkles for eyes
  • Whole Grain Popcorn for snow
  • Penguins Baked Snack Crackers
  • "PENGUINS" Scrabble Junior Cheez-It Crackers
  • penguin cookie

The penguin cookie is an Oreo.  I opened it and re-shaped the icing.  Then, I added sprinkles for the eyes, beak, and feet.  I found my inspiration at Party Pinching.

And to drink?  Melted Icebergs, of course!

I found this cute water bottle printable at Great Fun 4 Kids.
